The items below range from incredibly useful to just plain fun...and I like them so much, they are currently residing as individual shortcuts on my desktop. If you have any other free "toys" you think I should add to my "desktop," please drop me a line!

iGOOGLE
Bring the web to you! Your PLN will naturally get an upgrade as the term "home" or "dashboard" page has never been more appropriate (officially, it's a "customized web portal"). I'm probably starting to sound like an advertisement for Google so know that there are others like Netvibes and Pageflakes but I'm logging into my Google account anyway, which has my Google Reader, Google Docs...you get the point, check mine out!

RANDOM CLASSROOM SELECTOR
This "selector" can be used for calling on students, random questions and so much more! Even more here. Internet down (or can't find the "mute" button on your computer)? Use this PowerPoint version instead. Along the same line, here's a neat (and quick) way to create classroom groups.

ONLINE STOPWATCH, ALARM & COUNTDOWN TIMER
Say goodbye to having to answer the students when they ask, "how much time do we have left?!" I like this timer also. And this one. And this one.

QUICK TEXT TO VOICE
Never fails to get their attention when they aren't looking...change any text to a stranger's voice in your classroom!

PICTURES MADE OF WORDS
The power of picture using only words...you have seen "wordles," now make your own! Some ideas for classroom use here.

CREATE YOUR OWN FAKE ARTICLE CLIPPING
Really...where did that hour of my life just go!? The culprit is here. Really neat product for your students!

FREE AND EASY ONLINE PHOTO EDITING TOOL
Customize images with Picnik (there's that Google again). Picnik, as of 1/21/12, has announced it is folding...I'm looking for a replacement. If you want some serious audio and video editing power for free, set up an account with Aviary (you can use your Google login when setting up your account).

I could go on (and on, and on, really, I could). However; I promised my "current top 7" wouldn't be more than 7 items.BUT...if you are hungry for more, see below for some previous favorites

CLASSROOM VOLUME FEEDBACK VISUALS
Almost makes me want to yell in the middle of class...see for yourself here! Then there's always the standard "traffic light" visual.

SPELL WITH FLICKR
Spell words with real pictures (like my science wiki heading)! Start spelling now
HOW DOES THAT WORK?
OK, back to work...I'm always a science teacher at heart. Do you even know how your toaster works?!

I 'WARNED/ENCOURAGED' YOU!
Sometimes, a visual is better than "because I say so, or go for it!

RECORD AND SHARE YOUR SCREEN
With Screenr, you can create your own narrated screen-captured tutorials for your students. No downloads, up to 5 minutes of recording. Only limited by your creativity. Oh, and not so much for your classroom, but when my mom calls and asks for computer help...this little site is a lifesaver and this one does the same thing as well!
